Welcome parents, students and supporters of the 5th grade Muscatine Schools Orchestra Program! We are excited to have you as a part of our program and are looking forward to providing a great year of music to the students of the Muscatine elementary schools!
Orchestra Program Information
Participating in instrumental music is both rewarding and fun. Students in the MCSD 5th Grade Orchestra participate in:
- Weekly Lessons
- Weekly Orchestra Rehearsals
- Community Building Events (optional)
Parents and Students need to attend the Beginning Orchestra Open House Display Nights. These occur within the first few weeks of school. Contact your elementary school to find out the exact dates and times. West Music, Griggs Music and Schultz Strings will be at these meetings to give you information on instrument rentals. There are also some school instruments available.
Here is what your child needs to participate in orchestra:
- Instrument of their size (not too big)
- Essential Elements 2000 lesson book
- A shoulder rest (violin and viola)
- A rock stop (cello and bass)
- Music stand
Orchestra Super Lesson
Students joining orchestra are required to attend a Super Lesson on Thursday, September 17th from 6:00 – 7:00 PM at Muscatine High School in the music wing. Students will pick up their instrument from a music store or the school at the Super Lesson. During the Super Lesson, students will learn basic care and set up for their instrument, how to hold their instrument, and how to play their first notes. If your child is unable to attend the Super Lesson and wishes to participate in the MCSD Orchestra Program, you must contact the orchestra director prior to the Super Lesson.
Demonstration Concert – Thursday, January 28th- 7:00 PM, MHS
Solo and Ensemble Festival – Saturday, April 9th, 2016 – assigned times, West Middle School
Combined 5th Grade Band and Orchestra Concert – Thursday, April 28, 2016 – 7:00 PM, CMS
Participation in instrumental music takes a commitment from the student, as well as their family. Students participating in the orchestra program are expected to practice 10-15 minutes per day. Students are also expected to attend all scheduled lessons, rehearsals, and concerts.
Orchestra is an excellent way for your child to get more involved in school and make new friends! Through music, we will learn how to work together, enjoy the creativity of musical art, and make strong friendships that often last forever!
