5th Grade Orchestra


Welcome parents, students and supporters of the 5th grade Muscatine Schools Orchestra Program! We are excited to have you as a part of our program and are looking forward to providing a great year of music to the students of the Muscatine elementary schools!

Orchestra Days (below are the days the the students from each school will need to bring their orchestra instruments)

 

Orchestra Lesson Days

Monday – McKinley

Tuesday – Franklin and Mulberry

Wednesday – Grant

Thursday – Jefferson

Friday – Colorado and Madison

 

Orchestra Rehearsal Days

Tuesday – Franklin, McKinley and Mulberry

Thursday – Colorado, Grant, Jefferson and Madison

 

Orchestra Program Information

Participating in instrumental music is both rewarding and fun. Students in the MCSD 5th Grade Orchestra participate in:

  1. Weekly Lessons
  2. Weekly Orchestra Rehearsals
  3. Concerts
  4. Community Building Events (optional)

 

Display Nights

Parents and Students need to attend the Beginning Orchestra Open House Display Nights. Those meetings are;

  • Monday, September 10th, 2018 – 5pm and 7pm at Jefferson Elementary
  • Tuesday, September 11th, 2018 – 5pm and 7pm at Jefferson Elementary

West Music, Griggs Music, Ritchie Music and Schultz Strings will be at these meetings to give you information on instrument rentals. There are also some school instruments available.

Here is what your child needs to participate in orchestra:

  1. Instrument of their size (not too big)
  2. Essential Elements 2000 lesson book
  3. A shoulder rest (violin and viola)
  4. A rock stop (cello and bass)
  5. Rosin
  6. Music stand

 

Orchestra Super Lesson

Students joining orchestra are required to attend a Super Lesson on Monday, September 17th from 6:00 – 7:00 PM at Muscatine High School in the music wing. Students will pick up their instrument from a music store or the school at the Super Lesson. During the Super Lesson, students will learn basic care and set up for their instrument, how to hold their instrument, and how to play their first notes. If your child is unable to attend the Super Lesson and wishes to participate in the MCSD Orchestra Program, you must contact the orchestra director prior to the Super Lesson.

 

Orchestra Concerts

Demonstration Concert – Thursday, January 31st, 2019 – 6:30 PM, Muscatine High School

Solo and Ensemble Festival – Saturday, March 30th, 2019 – assigned times, West Middle School

5th Grade Orchestra Spring Concert – Thursday, May 2nd, 2019 – 6:30 PM, Muscatine High School


Orchestra Expectations

Participation in instrumental music takes a commitment from the student, as well as their family. Students participating in the orchestra program are expected to practice 10-15 minutes per day. Students are also expected to attend all scheduled lessons, rehearsals, and concerts.
